Life in an IIT

So I am back, I think I am becoming predictable, I should have a welcome music or a more dramatic entry like I am back, I am back, I am back. That reminds me that I am back on Facebook, one of my ex girlfriends deleted my Facebook account. And that too she first deleted the comments on the pictures, then the pictures, then all my friends and then my account. That too, she didn't disable the account, she deleted it but we will come down to that story some other time. So if you guys want you can add me because Facebook has warned me that I am using the add friends feature in a way it wasn't meant to be used and I should slow down otherwise I will be blacklisted. You can search for sid1391990@gmail.com on Facebook.
Coming down to the topic of the day, today I will be talking about life in an IIT which is ironic because I am hardly ever there on my campus. Nowadays whenever I take a bath and walk out of my room, people ask whether I am going back home even when I don't have anything in hand. The other day, I was going to my presentation with a laptop in my hand and someone on the way asked whether I am going back home, and I thought "dude, will I take just a laptop when I go back home and even if I take just the laptop, where is the charger?".
Since every college life has a love story and mine doesn't have any so I will be narrating a fictional story where there will be love, drama, action, okay not action because in IIT we just manage with abuses, we are not machos who will fight till death. The most action filled thing guys in at IIT do is play an action filled game or watch action movies.
I have a policy, never date girls 1) in the vicinity of my home 2) in college 3) with mutual friends because in all the three scenarios it becomes difficult to break up. Not that girls are running after me to date them but still, it gives me a sense of pride, that I didn't want it that is why I didn't get it.
So the fictional story revolves around a guy Animesh who is in the electrical department of an IIT.

                                                   Start of story

So lets start with the story but first
                                                       DISCLAIMER
All the characters in this story are fictitious. Any resemblance to any person living or dead is purely coincidental.

"Did you get the water to take a bath?" Ramesh asked me, and I was jolted and realized that I am stuck in this place at least for the next four years. And yes, we had no running water in the bathroom so we had to go downstairs and fill our buckets with water from a tanker. So that was the kind of scenario I was in but then I reminded myself that I opted for this college just because of the fact that it was near to my home. I had cried last night in bed like a girl, that I am stuck here.
So finally I didn't take a bath and went downstairs for dinner. The food was even worse than that in jail (not that I have ever been in a jail, but I am just being dramatic). Someone asked for a glass to pour water and the mess worker asked him to drink the water straight from the water jug. Is this the way you treat future CEOs?, although looking at the present placement scenario I don't think anyone will be even becoming the secretary to the CEO. I skipped dinner and went to cry myself to sleep.
I woke up the next morning at 7:55, I had a class at 8. Ramesh had taken a bath, done his prayers and eaten his breakfast. I asked him why didn't he wake me up and he said he tried but I abused him and went back to sleep. I apologized to him and then rushed to the class.
It was the dean's class who is also the head of the department of electrical department. People were talking that he flunk more than half the class of the senior batch. He just wanted to prove that he shouldn't be taken lightly, I know one thing for sure that people like him are bullied a lot all through their life that is why they trickle it down to us.
I was sitting the class and the biggest drawback of being in an IIT is a lack of testosterone drivers. In a class with hundred desperate guys, were only 10 girls and that too the good ones were already committed to some guy from their school time so there was nothing left to do in the class, nothing to ogle at, so I slept.
When I came back to the room, Ramesh inquired  "Animesh, did you make notes?", I asked him "Did you make any?", he replied in the affirmative and then I said "There is a machine known as xerox machine, even if I would have made notes, they wouldn't have been as good as yours so what is the point in making notes, I will just get yours xeroxed". He was filled with pride because I praised him, I knew my way about things.
So gradually the semester passed away and the exams were approaching, Ramesh studied around 16 hours a day and I slept around 12 hours a day. Since childhood I have seen that I work best under pressure, I study one night before the exam and manage to wriggle my way through so why change the pattern. I managed to get decent grades in all the subjects and the semester ended.
In the vacations I went to inter IIT as a part of the football team. We obviously didn't win but the aim wasn’t winning, it was avoiding a shameful defeat.
I went back home and then logged into my Facebook account. I had decided that today no matter what, I will send a friend request to Shambhavi, what is the worst thing possible?, she'll block me, big deal I have been blocked by a lot of girls before so I am used to it. Shambhavi was the topper of our class who aced all the subjects and she is good looking too (I was hoping that she didn’t have a boyfriend).
I woke up at 2 at night, logged into my Facebook account and there was one notification. Generally the notifications were from my college mates, inviting me to play ‘mafia wars’. But this one was different.  Shambhavi had accepted my friend request. I was overjoyed as if I had become the CEO of some big firm. So gradually over the next month we got talking and I began to like her (I liked her from the time I saw her but, I guess even she began to like me).
It was 11:30 at night and it was 13th February. I had decided that I will ask out shambhavi at 12 and once I make a commitment I don't even listen to myself( I was watching a Salman Khan flick). So I called her up around 11:45 and she asked me why I was sounding so stressed, I told her that she'll figure out soon.
I went outside the girls hostel, bribed the security guard to let me go till the stairs. So at 12 I asked Shambhavi to come downstairs. I asked her out and she surprisingly said “yes!!”. I hugged her and came back to my hostel. Till date I don't know who leaked the news all around the floor. The girls hostel and the boys hostel were facing so within the next five minutes boys from the entire floor were in the balcony shouting out loud, the shouting was partially because of the fact that a guy was carrying his laptop around and showing people a video of a beautiful girl dancing (I will come down to that girl in the story ‘girl next door’).
So I officially had a girlfriend, there was this feeling of achievement because having a girlfriend in an IIT is a big deal. So one day Shambhavi came to me and told me this guy was inquiring about her number and what a smart guy he was, he actually went to a friend of Shambhavi and instead of asking for her number, he asked for Shambhavi's number. So I went up to that guy and asked him to stay away from Shambhavi, he said "else what?", I abused him real bad. You know my animal instincts were provoked so I was marking my territory.
Gradually years passed by and we came in the final year of our college life. It was placement time, Shambhavi obviously got placed in a top notch firm. The only hope I had was flipkart as it was looking for a management trainee and was also paying well. In the interview they asked me "why should we hire you?", I had practiced the answer for this question a thousand times. I said "Sir, the question should not be why should we hire you, it should be why shouldn't you hire me, I have been the captain of the football team so I have leadership traits, I am a team player and I am dedicated, flipkart was a start-up so I will get to learn a lot, I always wanted to be a part of something like this and I assure you sir, I'll give my cent percent". They looked impressed, later on when the results were declared, I got to know that I am hired, and I was elated and more than me, Shambhavi was elated.
In the evening I was sitting with Shambhavi on the canal bank and she said "you got hired, what now?", and I said "as in?", she said "you very well know what happened with ishika and dipanshu". Ishika and dipanshu were our seniors, they were together for four years through college life and then after graduating, they parted ways (I will come down to them in the next story). I said "they didn't work out doesn't mean that we won't and I want to spend the rest of my life with you".
The next month the results of CAT came out  and as expected Shambhavi got a really good percentile. I was getting posted in Bengaluru by flipkart, I was hoping Shambhavi gets admission in IIM Bangalore and we live happily ever after but she got into IIM Calcutta and now the real test of our love starts. As for college time love story, this is

                                                           The End

Even I hope they live happily ever after and get married, marriage reminds me of a lame book by a writer (‘the one who must not be named’) in which a Tamil girl marries a Punjabi guy and he says their kids will not be tamil or punjabi, they will be Indians. He thinks his books will create a difference as if an orthodox tamilian will marry his daughter outside the caste after reading his book.
Coming  back to me, I think I should contest for the presidency of FOSLA, I'll definitely win.
