About me

I have studied mechanical engineering at IIT, done MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, and am working with a consulting firm in the area of human capital; but this blog has got nothing to do with any of that. Although some of the insights about human psychology might be drawn from the work I do.

I am sharing my Statement of Purpose for IIM Bangalore, which will tell you a lot more about me and the reason for this blog's existence.
Or you can watch this standup gig of mine in which I narrate an incident which many might call as a miracle.

How I did not meet the mother- The fall

                                                                     START

So right from the outset, I would like to say that I don't claim to be the brightest of minds wanting to get into IIM Bangalore, what I do claim is to be the part of a handful of those people who have struggled the most to reach a position of writing a statement of purpose for admission into a coveted institute like IIM Bangalore. Let me make things more lucid.
In 2012, I was on an internship with a social enterprise which sells devices running on renewable sources of energy, in villages. I was in villages, generating awareness about our organization by conducting roadshows.
That was when the accident happened. I was texting someone and fell from the terrace and my head hit against a couple of bricks. This is probably the biggest reason I am against texting (for others refer to http://howididnotmeetthemother.blogspot.in/2017/12/pole-dancer.html).

I was immediately rushed to AIIMS. If I would have been even half an hour late, I wouldn't have survived. I underwent two brain surgeries to remove the clot from my brain. My skull was removed for two months before the third operation, to allow the swelling in my brain to subside. I was on a ventilator for which they drilled a hole through my windpipe. I couldn't stand up or talk or even change sides on the bed while sleeping. In the initial phase, I couldn’t even eat, all I could intake was a liquid form of food. I couldn't even hold a spoon, so my mother had to spoon feed me. I couldn't speak because my trachea was drilled through earlier. I couldn't even stand up. I had to go through rigorous physiotherapy.

The physiotherapists said that it would take at least one to two years before I can join back IIT. I joined back college in three months and completed my degree with the same grade point as I had before the accident and got an international research paper published in my name in the final semester.

My outlook towards life has changed drastically after the accident. I have started valuing time, and people a lot more. I began blogging, have been a sub-editor a fashion magazine and have been a featured columnist in a national weekly. I haven't started fearing death. I believe that death will grace me with its presence when it is meant to. If I have to go to some village again for some work, I won't hesitate.

After the accident, I go to the gym regularly and am in great shape; despite the fact that after the accident I can't even run.

The reason why I want to pursue the Post Graduate Programme in Management is that I want to continue a career in the consulting sector. Although even currently I am working with a consulting firm, the work that is expected out of me entails more of number crunching. I believe that innately I am a more of the peoples' person and PGP in Management will help me harness those traits and teach me the right kind of skills to be able to reach a more managerial position at a consulting firm.
The best part is although I have written such a lengthy statement of purpose, after the accident, I can't write manually, and I scribbled to get the answers to the quantitative section in CAT.

END

The interview process after this was easy, except for one answer of mine.
They asked me the usual question "What after MBA?"
I calmly replied "Well, sir, I don't know that, but all I want is if ten years down the line, people type the first three letters of my name in the Google search window, my full name should be the first suggestion that Google prompts, and not in an Osama bin Laden kind of way, but in a right way."
I thought that I had left them spellbound, but then I had forgotten that it was an interview panel of IIM Bangalore which I was facing.

They outsmarted me instantly, by pointing out that Google search suggestions depend on the IP address of a particular computer, on my past search history and also that I could buy the rights to get my name as the first suggestion.

Well, I guess MBA will teach me a lot more ways to maneuver around the statements.
I forgot to tell you that I got an acceptance letter from IIM Ahmedabad too, so I didn't join  IIM Bangalore.

The ironic part is, my accident happened on 15th June 2012, and exactly three years later, on 15th June my MBA life began at the best B-school in the country. If this is not a miracle, then nothing is.

Later
Sidhant
