The Elevator Pitch
So although I might not have much attention to my courses at IIM Ahmedabad; but I still remember something taught to us in a communications course. The professor taught the concept of 'the elevator pitch'. In the business context, it means if you meet someone really important like the CEO of the company in the lift, how do you approach them with a business idea which you feel has immense potential value-add for the company, and in turn your career. The end aim is to get a follow-up meeting. It was like deja vu for me. For the past 8 years, elevator pitches are what I have been making. Just that in my case, it isn't the CEO but the muses. I feel that with so much practice, I have become a pro at it.
Anyway, coming to the muse of the blog. A close friend is interning in Mumbai so we are out almost every night. We were at a club near my place, that's where I met her. So, as I have pointed out in the earlier posts, one needs to precisely position himself to be able to capitalise upon the opportunities. If you are good at dancing, then flaunt your dance skills on the dance floor; good with words, head to places with lighter music (generally smoking areas); with money to flaunt head to the bar and buy drinks for girls. I was in the smoking room, and there was a girl standing adjacent to me. She was emanating a distinctly positive vibe which might be partly because of her ravishing looks, but mostly because of her carefree self. She was texting someone. I casually asked her, "Didn't find anyone in the party interesting enough to talk to?". She looked at me with an amused look. After a few minutes, she asked me whether I have a lighter as she wanted to light a cigarette. I offered her my lighter. As this was happening, I noticed a guy friend of hers emerge from the backdrop. Now at bars, if notice a group of good-looking girls, you'll generally find a friend zoned guy along with them. Dealing with these guys can be a bit tricky. Most of them act cocky and will try to treat you like a 'molester', even if you try to initiate a conversation with the group.
This guy seemed cool and sensed the vibe. Instead of blocking our talks, he left the smoking room after cracking a light joke. As we started conversing, I asked her what she does for a living. She told me that she teaches to the kids of primary school. My spontaneous reaction was "I actually have so many jokes coming to my head right now, you can't even imagine." She laughed it off. I felt that I might have offended her a bit, and said, "On a serious note, I really look up to you. You actually help people achieve their dreams." We immediately hit it off after conversing for a few minutes. I was chewing a gum. The bar was on the third floor and we were standing at breathing distance against the glass overlooking the road. After some time, we exchanged numbers and I headed back to the bar. She stood there chewing the gum.
I texted her later in the night after getting out of the bar around 3. She was out with her to grab to eat. Then she was planning to head back home. I called her up and convinced her to take a detour and told her that we would go for a drive. She drove by to pick me from my place and I invited her over. We decided that we'll go for the drive by the beach at dawn. She was having a smoke and offered me a drag. I told her that I don't smoke. She was astonished and inquired as to what I was doing in the smoking room with a lighter. Trying to keep a straight face, I replied "Content creation".
As we were chilling, and listening to music on SoundCloud, after a few songs including 'another brick in the wall'; I put on a captivating mashup. The rendition was around ten minutes long and all through was on a high note. The beats were quite fast paced and we matched every beat of the song. I didn't need to go the gym that day to workout. I don't think I can ever get that song out of my head. Post sunrise, we got out and drove around for a bit. We went to Starbucks for coffee, then she dropped me back and left for home.
So is this it? Is she the rhythm which was missing from my life all along? Well, certain encounters are best left at a high point with a cherishable memory. Ironically, she helped me achieve a dream although it involved her looking up to me instead. Even if a decade down the line, someone asks me about my favorite teacher, it isn't hard to guess what my answer will be.
